Prince Rama (Brooklyn) [10:30]
Video Love (DC/Paris) [9:30]
"What the hell is that?" is a question pretty familiar to the controversial Brooklyn band Prince Rama. The answer is far from simple; sister duo Taraka and Nimai Larson have lived in ashrams, worked for utopian architects, written manifestos, delivered lectures from pools of fake blood, their art has been exhibited internationally conducted group exorcisms disguised as VHS workouts, inventing a vegan cook books to writing love blogs, and have now finished inventing an apocalypse on which to base their new pseudo-compilation album, Top Ten Hits of the End of the World, comprised of ten singles "channeled" from fictional deceased pop bands. Prince Rama are constantly breaking the mold of what is acceptable to forge a dizzying universe that is wholly their own
Based in France, Video Love mixes drummer and vocalist Elmapi’s fanciful “electro pop” concoctions with Matterlink’s video sampling, which tends to favor scenes from obscure B movies. They have created an explosive and highly original blend of sound, image, and performance.
Multidisciplinary artist Katie Macyshyn personifies pop, politics, and psychedelia through her performance, video, and costume works. Embracing garish glamour and camp, Macyshyn often creates celebrity characters at the end of their time. These characters live in missed opportunities, trying to grasp at the energy which remains from their supernova. Can they find peace before it’s too late?
